Dashing through the Snow...the skijoring experience

January finds us all well and looking for new and exciting adventures. Raynor is well after his (operation) and he is now a pretty happy gelding. Solveig the German exchange student who hangs out with us on weekends has been riding him and he is quite enjoying the attention.

Right now our website is down due to our provider shutting his doors...I have my web host and favorite son working on correcting this problem. You may have to go to www.trinityjords.ca shortly to access until we can approve and activate the old .com site. I sound like I know what I'm talking about but I really don't so be patient. In the meantime the blog will serve as an interloper.
Pictured are Wanda,Solveig and I 'skijoring' yesterday and having a ball...we then went on a 2hr snow shoe up into the bush...needless to say I was 'bushed' last night. For Skijoring we used my regular harness and fed the traces through the shaft loops and then put some long heel chains on the end of the traces and a belt system that i could throw over my shoulder so I could disconnect very quickly by bending down and letting the belt slip off my shoulder....I used training driving lines as lines so I could use the full length if desired....I also found that going at a trot was much easier than walking...it seems that the steady speed of the trot allowed me to lean back into the belt and provide security and that way I was out of his mouth and able to have the right amount of contact for steering...I must say that corners are a challenge but we used the arena for safety and of course Raynor as the 'engine' because he is so steady, willing and doesn't spook easy....he also goes by verbal commands so I did not have to use a whip.....such fun but my legs and ankles were sore after only a couple rounds...Solveig and Wanda enjoyed it too and I am sure we will do it again.

.......the grass has 'ris, I wonder where the tulips is? Actually temps in the mid teens is great, the robins are here, so are the geese and best of all the snow is GONE? Life with fjords (for me) can start. Raynor is all shed out and when I had him out and tied him in the sun to brush him, he looked at himself in a window and decided he liked what he saw.....started to strutttt his stallion stuff and told me '...bring on the girlies.....he is quite full of himself right now but he will soon get hitched up and some of that energy will be channeled into 'work'.

Erik the Red and Baron the youngin' both put their rabbit ears on and are hoping for Easter to bring them a treat.

A new adventure ...with a hawk this time

Ok so I found myself heading to Taffy's place in Kennewick WA after attending the PNFPG meeting last weekend and got talked into staying an extra day cause we were having too much fun going to the giant craft fair and other 'shopping'.
Taffy had me feed her Hawk and that was a neat experience. Sniper is a 16 yr old Harris hawk and gorgeous. He did not like me at first since I was strange to him but food was his motivation to get closer and see that I had his dinner. He made a few turns and tried to rip the dead bird out of my hand but I held on till he finally sat on my hand...It is so interesting to watch the instinct to protect his food. He would wrap his huge wingspan around my hand so I could not see it and possibly take it away.
The real bummer was that we were able to be outside in the morning and have our coffee sitting in the hammocks....compared to freezing temps here at home. Having to go back to those temps was a little sad but we have had some amazingly balmy days since I returned so it's not too bad.
OK so I lied, it is snowing again this morning.....grrrrrr....I better get used to it.

One of our first stops on the first day was the Byward market as well as the Robert By museum which gave us an indication of what a remarkable feat is was to build the Lock system on the Rideau Canal.
Then had my photo taken with Laura Secord.

Spending time in our Capitol was indeed a great experience. I stayed with a friend and her family and spent the days touring the usual tourist things while the children were at school. I surely appreciated having someone who actually lives there to show me around. I visited the Parliament buildings (and said hello to Jack Layton) the Museum of civilization, Rideau Hall, official res. of our Governor General on Sussex Drive and across from the Prime Ministers Res....Managed to catch the Karsh exhibit at the Archives and spent my last day strolling through the Canadian Farm Experimental farm...oops yes, also visited the RCMP Musical Ride Stables and watched some new recruits get their second riding lesson....now that was fun to watch....now I don't feel so bad about my riding skills./

Much has happened since my last post and the worst part was getting a new computer. No matter what they tell you things just do NOT stay the same so it's back to the learning curve and the many questions to those who know so much more...
Ok so Brian and I went to the first EVER Canadian Fjord Horse Association Evaluation in Ontario. We saw some very nice Fjords and participants were happy to learn with their fjords...also, nice to see familiar faces.
I then spent a few days in the Muskoka area and a trip through Algonquin Park. My friend Shelley has her roots at Billy Bear Resort in Lake country and we spent a few days in the area going to Artisan exhibits, seeing the area and watching the trees turn gorgeous colors from day to day.

KATHARINA'S LAST FEW DAYS AT TRINITY FJORDS

Katharina Hoenscher from Tengen, Germany has been with us for 8weeks and she will be returning home on wednesday. A full summer of activities has kept her busy with riding, driving, trecking and showing. She has met many of our Fjord friends in this time and they all feel like we do...she is a pretty amazing 16yr old. Her task over the summer was to work with two of our young fjords and have them work in hand and used to discipline and commands. Izzy has decided that working is pretty good and the attention is great. Baron is a weanling and leaving mom to walk on a leadline is getting easier now and behaving is not so bad after all.
Kath will return home this week and start a Agri course at a nearby college. We wish her good luck and much success.

OK, so Molly goes out with Katharina and saddles up her fjord Nesja and they ride in the arena doing barrel racing and cones courses and "NESJA' just doesn't want to do what is being asked of her....hmmmm I am busy taking pictures and wondering if she is just being opinionated so I get a crop for Molly to help convince her to smarten up.....ALAS, I get closer and notice that she has the wrong genetalia?????what's upwith that????? THIS IS SAMBAR!!!!!! WRONG horse....Gotta love them thar Fjordies.

Saying good bye to Zen

It's been a hard couple weeks here with Zen not feeling well and refusing to eat..all meds and treatment seemed in vain and today the vet and I made the decision to let him go in peace. After 12 years of having this very loving animal in my life and receiving his unconditional love, I knew it was the right thing to do for him. Anyone who got to know this little guys will understand that he was my shadow and a soft place to fall. We buried him between Beau and Dempsey on the hill in front of the cabin overlooking the valley and he will be able to watch the goings on at Trinity Fjords...with his buddies by his side. Losing an animal/friend is always difficult and very sad but we do know that when we take on the task. We wouldn't have a full life without them.

Kath has had Erik out for a jumping lesson and he LOVES IT...like his daddy Raynor that is his reward for working hard. I also have photos forthcoming. I'm sure everyone will be thrilled to hear about his progress....OH yes, and Molly decided to jump rails last night. She did slide off her saddle (no stirrups) and landed on her butt....not to worry, she will listen better to instructions the next time.

Summer here with extreme temperatures (can you say hot) Kath is here for her internship and I lucked out. She is an amazing 16 yr old from Germany and a great rider and soon to be driver. She fits right in and is helpful and a self starter...My kind of gal.
The ladies of a certain age have come and gone and we had a great week, some good rides and the ever popular spa night. Ladies went home rested and rejuvenated and looking forward to next year.
As soon as I get a few photos I will post them. Irv and Kathy are now here for a few days and we will be busy doing mostly swimming in the river and kicking back.
Brian did the evaluation in California this past weekend and will be home tired and in need of a few days rest. It was hot hot hot for him standing in the rind watching 30+ horses and trying to keep his concentration in tact.He will be needing some days off which are hard to find around here in the summer.

Erik the Red aka Raynor's Red aka Erik finds his groove

Wow what a weekend the boy had. The whole Trinity Fjords gang (Brian Ursula Wanda and Julie) spent the weekend in the very small town of 70Mile House in the Cariboo this weekend. About a 5hr drive from home (faster coming home cause it's all downhill)...The Huber brothers held their 3rd annual Cariboo Trails CDE. A venue in the growing stages but there were over 30 entries and it was EC (Equine Canada sanctioned). Quite a love area obviously a haven for fishing and hunting and we were told that mosquitos would be bad but we were lucky and did no problems: at dusk the stingers came out but soon left when it was dark.
This was our first attendance and we had a great time. The hazards were challenging but the land was mostly flat and only a small rough section during section A.
Erik was amazing: He again won his division in Preliminary Dressage and this time Ursula managed to steer him straight thru the cones course without faults...yeeeehaa...we were 1st overall after Dressage and Cones. In the two years that he has been driving with me he has won every dressage division and has moved up from Training to Preliminary in that time...quite a feat and shows how much he enjoys the sport. Julie (my navigator)saved my butt in the Hazards but we did get our share of time faults due to being too fast on section A and some brain farts in the Hazards...Oh well...Erik found that his 'motor' was at the back and that it would stand him well to use it.It all came together for him this weekend and I am thrilled with his prgress.
Wanda also won her Training dressage division for pony pairs and she drove an amazing test: unfortunately she had three balls down in cones...so sad..Julie had her hands full with Raynor who,of course, manages to attract his share of attention by being a show off and decided to drive the test HIS way. He duked her several times and but by the time of the cones course he had settled somewhat and she managed to get him straight enought to go clear on the course.
Brian drove the 4-in-hand and of course got his fair share of attention just by showing up. The four are so impressive as a unit and he drives them well. His dressage test was exceptional but they set the course too tight for the cones...the judge apologized and gave him his time. I did not get photos cause I was getting ready for my own test.
When all was said and done, Erik received 'best conditioned Horse of the Event" and won me a stethoscope from the Vet. I was thrilled as that is a great compliment for his conditioning and shows we were ready to take on this event. I also won the Sportmanship award and placed 3rd overall in our division. Brian got first for multiples.A great time was had by all....look out next year>>!!

As age is catching up to Brian he looks for new modes of affordable transportation to do farm work and chores around the farm. This is his new toy....what he REALLY wants is an ATV but this will have to do for now.

Neighbor's wedding

One of our neighborhood last remaining bachelors was married yesterday. Brian decided that our wedding gift to the couple would be to provide the bride (Tammy)with an 'entrance' as well as an exit (Tammy and Raymond) with our four-in-hand. The big deal would be to get the horses accross a very narrow one lane wooden bridge with the Shuswap river swiftly flowing underneath. A worry indeed but with the help of Julie and Wanda all went well. It was a lovely, fairly casual outdoor wedding at a small campsite and Hall on the Shuswap River. All went well and Carol and Jim Boehm came by to lend support and libation when it was all over. I managed to get a photo of Jim in true form.

Penfrydd's Rayetta did it again. She gave us another spectacular foal. Not white this time but with legs that have no end. Cute as a button and uses those legs to sprint around the paddock. A hoot to watch.
Trinity's Baron was born around 1am on June 9th 09....once he stood up he was afraid to lay down for fear of not being able to figure his legs out I'm sure. That same morning we let mom and Baron out and he was curious and adventurous...all good signs. All mom wanted is some green grass. When I was watching him try to attempt nursing he kept coming through to the other side and missing the nipple...way funny...it took him a couple tries before he figured out that he had to stop where the nipples were and work from there. He has his anticts for sure and is fun to watch.

Penfrydde's Raynor was a favorite again as he struts his stuff and keeps everyone alert to his antics. Julie did well with him and garnered two 9's on her training dressage test. She almost went clean on the Cones course and came in ahead of time and with a clean hazard round. She was pretty happy.
Macy and Shannon hung out with Erik the Red on Sunday.He attracted much attention with his good looks and charming personaility. People don't often get to see a red dun and were quite fascinated.

June 14 & 15 took us to our first event for 2009. With two trailers, 6 horses and 3 drivers and two friends who wanted to experience a CDE, off to Pritchard B.C. we went.
The weather was fairly good this year aside from a few sprinkles and thunder clouds we had a great weekend. Brian drove his four on Sat and did all three components. I drove Erik in Preliminary for the first time. Wanda drove a pair and Julie drove Raynor. We all did GREAT and were happy with the outcome. Our new friends Shannon Walton and daughter Macy came along to help and ride shotgun on Sat. for Brian. Macy had a chance to ride Erik a bit and they both had a good time. Future drivers I hope.

Molly has been doing awesome with her riding and now she has started driving Nesja. She is very motivated even with an attention span of a 5 yr old gnat.
the pictures tell it all. She is walking and doing a bit of trotting herself. I don't push her and she tells me when she is ready for the next step.
Safety is always our first priority.

Today we also received notice that Bastian has his first colt on the ground. He is in Alberta and we are not sure if he is white or brown dun. Sure is a cute little fellow. See him at 1 week old.

Also went down to Moses Lake last weekend for Spring Fling. Did some driving lessons and a short overview of CDE's photos show my students doing very well.

Euitana Essen 2009

What an amazing experience this was. Another item crossed off my Bucket List. I was pleased to present the Ribbon to the Top stallion Dexter for CFHA. Dexter is also the daddy of some of the fillies that came on the Lift. He is a nice boy but then I saw his daddy Dylan in Oldenwald and he is even better looking. All in all if any of you get a chance to see some of the videos from Equitana on You Tube, they are well worth the time. Check out the IGF Fjord Quadrille team...awesome.
One of the photos shows Borken, the daddy of our new White dun Stallion Bastian vom Oderhaff trying to get on the bus cause he decided the long walk from the barns to the exhibits (Messe)was too long.
Also had a good time with Horst and Annemarie for her special 80th birthday. Uwe was there to spend the day with us and eventually too me to the airport that night.

After a long journey the fillies are home: had a chance to roll and cavort with glee. The next day the federal and the local vets came to draw blood and all the testing began. They are in quarantine until results are passed. They look amazing after a long journey and are loving the sunshine that we are having.

My niece Corrina writes:

Hi Ursula,

Brian invited me to come along and see the whole process. Wow!!!!! We went to the airport at 5:00am but the plane didn't arrive until 7:00am. The horses were offloaded, taken out of the crate, vet checked and loaded into the trailers all within 40 minutes. Everyone was fine. The mare had a nasty itch that needed to be scratched and the little white dune was pretty feisty but curious. Everyone was wonderful and so great with the horses. I'm amazed at how fast everything moved along. When I left at 8:00 Brian was waiting for customs papers but he wanted me to let you know they were on their way. Corrina

Ok, so I leave for Essen Germany tomorrow morning and going to Equitana, the German Fjord Registry (IGF) 35th Jubilee and my aunt's 80th birthday.
Yippee.....for you horse fans ...guess what?
I will be seeing Lorenzo LIVE.....too bad eh?
I will bring prictures and maybe even a video to share...
I will be back on the 22nd March and hopefully spring will be here. In the meantime....enjoy the weather, there is nothing we can do about it.

First Ride Of The Year

Took Erik the Red (Erik) out for his first ride of the season. He was VERY vigilant and made sure I knew that the dogs and the peacocks that greeted us were definitely going to get him and his life would be over. On the way home he thought faster was better. Poor guy had to walk the whole way and back again and came home all in one piece in spite of himself.
The snow is melting slowly and the roads are drying up so soon the routine driving and riding to get the teams into shape will start.

Thor goes home after being at Trinity Fjords for the winter

Thor is finally back home after spending the winter at Trinity Fjords where his (almost) daily workout gave him such a beautiful neckline to greet his friend Reina. Watch for this boy in the driving ring in the future cause he is amazing and talented. Taffy will have to put the miles on him but he will be a looker, no doubt about it. Right now he is in good shape and loves his work.
Brian took Thor back to Kennewick WA two days ago and he and Taffy have been driving and having some lessons while he is there.

A few weeks ago Julie and I went to see the Froelich's in Snohomish WA. for a quick visit. We were watching Karli do some of her gymnastic moves: she was having some difficulty standing on her head so I decided to show her a yoga move that gets the legs up slowly....anyway, everyone thought it was sooooo funny when I started and they decided to get a photo of my butt for the world to see.....Julie, being the helpful friend that she is, decided to stand as spotter and it turns out the photo shows HER butt and mine...not so much....Ha ha!!

Of course Karli was much more graceful when SHE did it.....dont' ya just hate gettin old?

ok so here is the latest updated photo of us. As many know we do this annually at the time of her birthday (Molly's that is) she is 5yrs old now and ever the little girl. She has definite opinions but is polite and respectful. She still loves to come out to the farm and feed the horses and clean the pens. She is amazing about keeping all gates shut and in no uncertain terms does she let me know if I leave a gate open...she has taken up snowshoeing with me this winter and seems to enjoy getting outside and doing snow stuff. I think she will be quite athletic and will probably do soccer again this spring. Instead of her usual dancing class which has moved to a different inconvenient time, she is doing Drama in Vernon on Sat this next few weeks. What a performer indeed.

Our Granddaughter Molly loves to ride her Fjord Nesja and at the age of 4 last year was in the leadline class at the Northwest Fjord Show at Moses Lake...she loved getting another blue ribbon.

2008 had me fulfill an item on my Bucket List by going to Tuscany Italy with my cooking friends. They are also Fjord Friends so we had more in common.

We, at Trinity Fjords are joyful that Obama is the new US president today. We hope there will be positive changes for our American friends.

In keeping with the theme, yesterday was Martin Luther King Day and our own 41st wedding anniversary. pictured is our Family photo from last May when I turned 60. Birgit has not driven for many years and her daddy would be proud to see her giving it a go. We tried to get her to publish this photo in her Danish Association Newsletter but Birgit is somewhat camera shy and refuses all photographs unless you catch her by surprize. Edith Hansen a judge and dressage rider/trainer, Ole Olsen, a senior Fjord judge in Denmark and the Pres. of the association Birgit Mortensen who is now also the vice-chair of Fjord Horse International. a BOD that Brian also has sat on for 3yrs representing Canada's CFHA, and the NFHR of North America.

We have had such fun at the annual Fjord Show in Norway over the years and being able to bring them to N.A. and show them our Fjords and what they can do, was great....they came to the PNFPG Northwest Fjord Show in Moses Lake with us to meet other breeders and owners of this marvelous breed.

Trinity's Bryn first white dun foal born to Trinity Fjords in 08

Bastian Vom Oderhaff arrived from Germany as part of Lift of young fjords to Canada.

In this photo he was 2yrs old (1907)he is now 4 and meeting all of our expectations.

We were thrilled this year when our mare Rayetta birthed our first white dun foal this year (2008) from our young imported stallion Bastian vom Oderhaff (Germany). Bryn is now 1yr old and will be going to her new home in North Dakota in the spring.

With all the snow we had this winter the time for 'dashing thru the snow' is a welcome change for Oma and Molly.
